WHY I READ TRANSLATIONS OUT LOUD

I have a habit few people know about: before handing in a finished translation, I read it out loud. Not the whole thing — the key paragraphs. Especially in letters and applications.

The thing is, the eye misses a lot. The ear doesn’t. If a sentence stumbles, if it sounds awkward, if the tone is off — I only notice it when I say it out loud.

Sometimes after reading it aloud I rewrite an entire paragraph. Sometimes — I change one word, and everything falls into place.

I think this rule works outside of translations too. If something matters — read it out loud. A letter, a message, an application. You’ll be surprised how much you start to hear.
